The COVID-19 epidemic is affecting the entire world and its population. The impact of the outbreak to the department store industry and its stakeholders is significant and stressful.
The situation in Europe has clearly improved in the last weeks, due to restrictive sanitary and behavioural measures as well as extensive vaccination programmes. In contrary some Asian countries are facing a resurgence of the pandemic and had to impose more restrictions again. As of 3 June 2021, 32 out of 43 IGDS members could open all of their stores, under the usual opening schedule and sanitary measures. Nine department stores are operating with limited capacity (reduced opening hours, limited # of customers instore, stores closed in certain region or up to a certain surface). Two 4 department stores had to close completely their physical stores. One country still impose department stores to close (except tge Food department when relevant) : Malaysia.
