On 21st August, Salling opened the doors to a new destination for fashion, design and experiences. The new Salling has been developed as a destination rather than a traditional department store. Across 3,000m², a curated selection of international and Danish brands in fashion, beauty and footwear comes together with cafés, art, events and inspiring spaces to relax. The architecture, materials and atmosphere have all been designed as an important part of the experience. Salling is moving into Knud Højgaards Hus, which previously housed, among other things, Copenhagen’s Main Library. The building has been extensively transformed, respecting its history while introducing a contemporary architectural expression. Raw plastered walls, exposed installations, oak, stainless steel and a large atrium filled with natural daylight give the building its character, while specially designed lighting - including a striking light installation by British designer Tom Dixon - creates a distinctive atmosphere after dark.
At the heart of the building, the café, with its green plant-covered ceiling and changing art exhibitions, will serve as a natural meeting point. Wide oak staircases provide a setting for talks, events and cultural experiences, while during the summer, the rooftop will host selected events with views across Copenhagen. ‘Retail today is about much more than goods on shelves. People are looking for inspiration, experiences and places where they want to spend time. That is the ambition behind Salling at Kultorvet, and we look forward to becoming an active part of life in Copenhagen,’ said Marianne Bedsted, CEO of Salling.
The opening weekend is designed as a huge invitation to the city, with Salling transforming Kultorvet into a large garden where everyone is invited to the Housewarming. Jeuru and Lea Romea will perform on stage, while a surprise act will mark the official opening on Friday morning. ELLE editor-in-chief Cecilie Ingdal will host a talk with Mads Nørgaard and Andrea Elisabeth Rudolph about fashion, creativity and entrepreneurship, while DJ Emilie Lilja will provide the atmosphere on both days.
More than 25 brands will take part, offering free beauty treatments, workshops, competitions and exclusive giveaways. Guests can also enjoy coffee, croissants, drinks, sparkling wine and sweet treats throughout the building and in the front garden.
