The European Commission has adopted the first regulation implementing EU legislation against forced labor, marking a key operational step in the deployment of the legislative framework that will ban these products from the European market. The text, published in the Official Journal of the European Union (EU), defines the functioning of the information system that will connect the Commission, the competent national authorities and the customs authorities for the application of the regulation. Specifically, the regulation provides for the creation of a specific module on forced labor within the Information and Communication System for Market Surveillance (Icsms), which will serve as a central tool for managing investigations, decisions and enforcement measures. The standard against forced labor in the EU will enter into force on 18th May 2026 and is part of the development of the regulation adopted in 2024. According to the regulation, the system will also be used to conduct risk assessments and to identify products or product groups likely to be linked to forced labor, thus strengthening the preventive capacity of the European framework.
